Travel to Rome City, IN with members of the Indiana Society of Pioneers as we explore the newly enhanced and beautifully landscaped “Limberlost North” beloved by famed naturalist Gene Stratton-Porter. Gene was a nationally acclaimed nature photographer, author of bestselling “The Girl of the Limberlost”, and an early environmentalist. This site includes her cabin, gardens, arbors and paths intact from her era. First stop will be a visit to the well-respected Allen County Public Library in Ft. Wayne, which is well-known throughout the U.S. for its geneology division. Next, we will lunch at St. James Restaurant in Avilla, which has been serving delicious family-style meals since the 1870’s. Then, following a brief visit to the interesting Mid-America Windmill Museum, we will take time to explore Limberlost. This 125 tract should be in full spring glory as we take time to thoroughly enjoy special programming and an afternoon tea, while walking/viewing the place Gene named Wildflower Woods. It chronicles the only Civil War battle fought on Indiana soil, triggered by the July 8, 1863 Ohio River crossing and subsequent capture of Corydon, Indiana by Confederate General John Hunt Morgan and his band of 2,400 cavalry. “A”

IN – USA: Unique Farm Tours!

Join us for a behind the scenes tour of some unique Indiana farms! Our first stop is at the Hunters Honey farm in Martinsville, a family owned business who have been in the bee business for over 100 years. The Hunter family manage several hundred hives throughout the state that are used to pollinate apples, melons, strawberries, pumpkins, and other similar crops. While at the honey farm, you’ll have an opportunity to create your own beeswax candle! Next we learn about the art of growing and painting gourds at the Lankford Farm and Homestead Primitives. You’ll have a chance to view her primitive furniture and antiques in her farmhouse as well as take home a surprise gift! Lunch will be enjoyed at a local independent family restaurant. After lunch we’ll enjoy dessert at Traders Point Creamery in Zionsville, a family owned artisan organic dairy! In addition, you’ll have a tour of their dairy farm and sample their delicious cheese and chocolate milk! Fair Oaks Farm & “Green Power”!

Wear your “farm” clothes as we travel to Northwest Indiana where we start our day milking the cows! Oops – mistake, we don’t milk the cows, but we do take a bus to tour Fair Oaks Farms, one of the largest dairy farms in the United States. We’ll get to see the carousel type milking process first hand, and the dairy processing plant where you can see cheese and ice cream made! Experience the creation of life as you witness the birthing of a calf in the birthing barn. Enjoy a buffet lunch which will include some of the ice cream made at Fair Oaks! Be sure to take a small cooler along, if you wish to take home some goodies as you stop at the gift and cheese shops! Then it’s on to Reynolds, IN where we have the unique opportunity to witness “Green Power”! We will visit 3 renewable energy plants which create “green power”. The first plant is Liberty Landfill, which takes the methane gas from landfills to create electricity. The second plant processes “cow poo” in an anaerobic digester to generate methane gas, which is then used to power internal combustion engines to generate electricity. The third plant is the Reynolds Wastewater Treatment plant, which uses the Algaewheel system for a variety of things including the generation of electricity! From sculpting limestone, weaving yarns to savoring delectable foods, you’re sure to enjoy a day in Bloomington and Ellettesville, Indiana observing various artisans at work. We start the day in Bloomington at the Textillery Weavers, a textile mill, where we will tour their new 37,000 square foot, state of the art facility. They are one of the few textile mills in the world specializing in handwoven products. Our next stop is at the Bloomington Culinary School where you are sure to enjoy a leisurely lunch featuring fine cuisine. Let your palate taste the savory meal created by the food artisans at work! We then head to Ellettesville to the reknowned Bybee Stone Co., where we will watch sculpture artisans at work and have an opportunity to talk to them at the Indiana Limestone Symposium. Observe beginning and advanced carvers as nationally known stone artists instruct these carvers. The Symposium was founded in 1996 by two master stone sculptors based on the Greek model of coming together for discussion and celebration. After a sensory fun filled day, we head back home! “M”

Fabulous Fountains of Chicago

Everyone loves a water feature and Chicagoans are no exception! Through the years Chicago has become the home of some fabulous fountains. Our favorite Chicago expert, Bill Hinchliff, provides the historical backdrop as our bus meanders through the parks and boulevards to view these urban jewels that enhance this fabulous city. This tour will feature the Fountain of the Great Lakes at the Art Institute, which is part of a beautiful Modernist park by the great landscape architect Dan Kiley (who worked a lot in Columbus, Indiana because of his close association with Eero Saarinen; ); the Melas Centennial Fountain along the Chicago River, which erupts every hour on the hour –we’ll be there to see it go! — with a spectacular arch of water that shoots across the river; the Fountain of Time by Lorado Taft (one of the largest sculptures in the U.S.) and the oldest fountain in Chicago (early 1880s) called the Drexel Fountain, near Obama’s house, which we’ll drive by after seeing the fountain; the Storks at Play Fountain in Lincoln Park and, of course, Chicago’s most famous, Buckingham Fountain, one of the world’s largest decorative fountains and the great centerpiece of America’s only large-scale French-style park. In the middle of all this beauty, we will enjoy a delicious lunch at Francesca’s, one of the local favorites in the part of the city called Little Italy. We then travel to Muncie, IN, where we will tantalize our taste buds at Vera Mae’s Bistro, one of IFA’s culinary stars. Next we tour the Minnetrista, a museum offering exhibits featuring beautiful gardens, the Ball home, Nature Area, and numerous sculptures on a 40 acre campus. The name chosen by the Ball family for the property was taken from a Sioux word, “mna” (pronounced mini) which means “water,” and combined with the English word, “tryst,” to form “Minnetrista,” or, “a gathering place by the water.” As we leave the Muncie area we make one last stop to smell and taste some delectable chocolate or home made ice cream at Good’s Candy Shop in Anderson, IN before heading home! “A”

Tippecanoe and Nelson Too!

Once again we have the privilege of joining Nelson Price and the Indiana Society of Pioneers on an interesting excursion into Tippecanoe County’s past. Nelson provides the always informative historical back drop as we travel to the Delphi area for the first half of our day. We will take a private “cruise” on the Wabash & Erie Canal aboard the only working canal boat in Indiana—as our guide shares anecdotes and insights about everyday life 150 years ago. While there we will tour the Reed Case House, a grand Federal-style home built in 1844, and spend time in the Canal Interpretive Center, a museum that includes interactive exhibits. Canal expert Dan McCain will provide a special, colorful presentation about the building of the canal and the lives of Hoosiers impacted by all that took place. Lunch will follow at a restaurant located in a lovely wooded area of Lafayette called The Trails, which was voted “Best Buffet” 3 years running in the local paper, “The Journal and Courier”. Next, a guide from the Tippecanoe County Historical Association will direct our visit to the Tippecanoe Battlefield, the legendary site of a clash between two cultures—pioneer settlers and Native Americans. Down the road, we will visit the recreation of Fort Ouiatenon, a military and trading outpost constructed by New France. While there, we will have the privilege of hearing Pioneer member, Bob Dora, a descendant of French explorer Sieur de La Salle, share insights about the fort and his ancestors. We will enjoy wine and cheese as we head home making one final stop at Donaldson’s Finer Chocolates, a gourmet chocolate shop in Lebanon, with an opportunity to shop. While you were shivering, some Sunrise travelers were enjoying sunny days, walks on the beach and beautiful sunsets during their 3-week stay on St. Pete Beach in Florida at the Sirata Beach Resort. Plan your winter escape now with Sunrise Tours as we return for our 7th year to what we think is a jewel of a location to spend winter days.

Your days can be as busy or leisurely as you choose during your stay on St. Pete Beach. A hop on the Suncoast Beach Trolley, which stops in front of our hotel daily every 20-30 minutes, will take you south as far as Pass-a-Grille or north as far as Clearwater Beach. Sunrise will provide transportation on two optional excursions each week for which participants pay only for admission if there is one. The Sirata has a restaurant and two beach bars which serve food, a fitness center, business center, sundry shop and large laundry room on the premises. As a Sunrise Tours guest, the Sirata will give a 10% discount on all restaurant food purchases and there is no extra cost for high-speed wireless internet access and beach cabanas. The Sirata is also located within easy walking distance to restaurants, a drug store and grocery store.

We have reserved two room types at the Sirata Beach Resort. In building 1 the Gulf front rooms directly face the Gulf, have 2 queen beds in the bedroom and a small refrigerator and microwave in the kitchenette. In building 4, the Gulf view rooms have a king bed in the bedroom on floors 3-6 and 2 queen beds on floor 2 and a full refrigerator, microwave and cook top in the kitchenette. Day 3: Cajun Country
Some like it hot! Today we’ll explore some Cajun heat starting with tasting some of the ‘hot” flavors at McIlhenny Co. Tabasco factory. After a drive through McIlhenny’s Jungle Gardens, tour America’s oldest working rice mill, Konriko. In the afternoon the festivities begin at the Vermillionville Heritage and Folklife Park where live Cajun music and cultural demonstrations will captivate and a stop at the Acadian Cultural Center will educate. Day 4: French Quarter
This morning as we make our way to New Orleans, we’ll tour the only place in the world where the general public can walk aboard an authentic offshore drilling rig and hear real life stories at the International Petroleum Museum. Afterwards, go face to face with alligators on a swamp boat tour en route to New Orleans. Once in the Big Easy, take in the historic Jackson Square known as ‘Place d’Armes’, home of an open-air artist colony before checking into our hotel for a two-night stay in the French Quarter of New Orleans. Day 5: New Orleans, LA
Begin the day with a visit to The National WWII Museum, founded by noted writer and historian Stephen E. Ambrose. Experience the museum’s signature cinematic theater while viewing Stephen Spielberg’s “Beyond All Boundaries” and have an opportunity to hear stories of Veterans while viewing the exhibits. Enjoy jazz music as we have brunch at the world-famous Court of Two Sisters. We’ll wander through the French Market, then stop in for a traditional beignet from the original Café du Monde. Next explore with a local guide to hear and see city highlights including landmarks, history and river lore. Visit the renowned Bellingrath Gardens and home featuring a 65- acre estate and enjoy over 250,000 azaleas in full bloom! The remainder of the afternoon is yours to enjoy the amenities of the Beau Rivage. B, D

Visit Beauvoir (means “beautiful view”), home of Jefferson Davis, including the newly re-opened Presidential Library and enjoy a guided tour of Pleasant Reed House and Interpretive Center at the Ohr O’Keefe Museum, selected in the top 100 issue by TIME magazine for its Style and Design. This morning, we will visit the museum “Newseum”, a multimedia exploration of the importance and history of journalism in America. Since it’s opening in 2008, the Newseum has become a “must-see” attraction on the Washington DC museum circuit. We’re in for a spectacular show as we spend the remainder of the day visiting
the National Mall, the Memorials and enjoying the Cherry Blossom Festival activities amidst the magnificent back drop of cherry trees. B, D.

We will see the ruins of Historic Fort Sumter where the civil war began and a view of Charleston from the Harbor. Upon our return to the pier, we will tour the USS Yorktown. As featured in the Academy Award winning documentary “The Fighting Lady”, the 888 ft. aircraft carrier was the tenth carrier to serve in the US Navy. Embrace the history of Charleston as we visit the Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, an estate acquired by the Dalton Family in 1676.
