Hop on board the Easter Bunny Express as we head East towards Richmond, IN . Today we’re in for a fun filled day as we make stops at antique shops, sweet shops, unique shops and a winery!! We’ll visit the Wayne County Visitor’s Center, where we’ll have a chance to inspect locally made crafts, pick up our Chocolate Trail Passport then we hit the trail! We’ll stop in the Historic Richmond area where we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch and have a chance to enjoy chocolates at Ghyslain Chocolatier and Bistro! Then it’s on to another chocolate sampling at a Richmond landmark since 1909, Olympian Candy, whose chocolate-covered specialties are toffee and dittles (like turtles)! We’ll stop at The Warm Glow Candle Outlet which can only be described as an 11,000 square foot shopping Mecca! Not only will you find over 75 candle fragrances to chose from but also, home décor, customized florals, bath & Body products, Purses, Gifts, and a small car museum! There may also be a few more “treasure spots” along the way where we stop! By the end of the day we’ll be pumped full of endorphins from shopping, chocolate and fun, as we head back home perhaps with a bag full of goodies for your grand kids! Happy Easter to all! “A”

Wind Farm, Subaru Plant, Brewery & More!

Our first stop today will be at the Subaru of Indiana’s Lafayette assembly plant where the Outback, Legacy, Tribeca, and the Toyota Camry are manufactured. You’ll have the opportunity to observe a vehicle manufactured from start to finish and learn about the factory’s “green” initiatives. We’ll enjoy lunch and a tour at a tiny ale brewery in a historic, turn-of-the-century building at Lafayette Brewing Company where handcrafted ales are brewed in the Old World tradition! Afterwards we travel to Benton County, IN where we’ll learn much during our guided tour of a Western Indiana wind farm, where dozens of massive windmills produce clean electricity for the surrounding area. We’ll top our day off with some scrumptious ice cream from Trader’s Point Creamery in Zionsville, IN as we return home after a fun filled day! “A”

We’re in for a “Sweet” day as we make our first stop at Good’s Candy Store in Anderson, IN where the Good family have been making chocolates since the 1940’s. We’ll have a chance to visit their viewing area and actually see their candies and ice cream being made. After having “dessert” before the main course, we’ll enjoy a nice buffet luncheon at the Prima Harvest Buffet at the Hoosier Park. We then head for the Paramount Theatre where we will feast on laughter as we enjoy the side splitting comedy of Carl Hurley and Jeanne Robertson in their “Double Funny” comedy tour! Filled with food, laughter and love, we head back home to get ready for our next great adventure! “E”

We’ll start our day touring Elsbury’s greenhouses in Hope, IN, where you’ll behold the spectacular sight of over a million beautiful plants and flowers ready to plant in your back yard! Learn how these plants are started and how Elsbury’s gets them ready for market. Stop in the garden shop, where you may find something to take home! Then it’s on to Aunt Aimes Tea Room located in the Strawberry Fields Mercantile in Hope, IN where you’ll “feel like you’re stepping into the Olsen’s’ General Store on “The Little House on the Prairie”. Enjoy a delicious homemade lunch and perhaps view the antiques in this quaint mercantile. Next we circle on down to Columbus, IN where you’ll see something uniquely funny at the new “Kids Common” museum (I can’t tell you what you’ll see, you’ll just have to come see for yourself!) then cross over to the “The Commons” and see the latest 3 story kinetic sculpture in this new “public space”. Time for dessert, as we head for Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor & Museum which was “Named The #1 Thing Every Hoosier Must Do by Indianapolis Monthly Magazine (Aug. 2010)”! Next we start circling around to Edinburgh towards home, with a stop at the “Not Just Popcorn” factory and the new Eluna Coffee “factory”, where you will have a tour of each shop and taste some freshly made popcorn and fresh roasted coffee! What a treat! After circling around Columbus, it’s homeward bound to get ready for our next trip! “M”

Travel to Rome City, IN with members of the Indiana Society of Pioneers as we explore the newly enhanced and beautifully landscaped “Limberlost North” beloved by famed naturalist Gene Stratton-Porter. Gene was a nationally acclaimed nature photographer, author of bestselling “The Girl of the Limberlost”, and an early environmentalist. This site includes her cabin, gardens, arbors and paths intact from her era. First stop will be a visit to the well-respected Allen County Public Library in Ft. Wayne, which is well-known throughout the U.S. for its geneology division. Next, we will lunch at St. James Restaurant in Avilla, which has been serving delicious family-style meals since the 1870’s. Then, following a brief visit to the interesting Mid-America Windmill Museum, we will take time to explore Limberlost. This 125 tract should be in full spring glory as we take time to thoroughly enjoy special programming and an afternoon tea, while walking/viewing the place Gene named Wildflower Woods. Join us as we tour the beautiful new Palladium in Carmel, IN at The Center for the Performing Arts. You’ll also have the opportunity to tour the Great American Songbook Gallery which is a special project of Michael Feinstein, a noted historian and showman. Watch for more information on Michael Feinstein on the PBS channel in January 2012. We’ll enjoy lunch at Kelties in the small town of Westfield, IN. Keltie, the owner, grew up in Delphi, Indiana on a large farm. Kelties restaurant was voted in the top 100 American Restaurants across the US, out of 10 million restaurants reviewed by “Open Table” in 2011! After lunch we’ll journey to Conner Prairie where we’ll see the new exhibit, “1863 Civil War Journey: Raid on Indiana”, which is being described as the “next generation”of the American museum exhibit combining artistry and magic of technology with the authenticity and warmth of live characters. It chronicles the only Civil War battle fought on Indiana soil, triggered by the July 8, 1863 Ohio River crossing and subsequent capture of Corydon, Indiana by Confederate General John Hunt Morgan and his band of 2,400 cavalry. “A”

IN – USA: Unique Farm Tours!

Join us for a behind the scenes tour of some unique Indiana farms! Our first stop is at the Hunters Honey farm in Martinsville, a family owned business who have been in the bee business for over 100 years. The Hunter family manage several hundred hives throughout the state that are used to pollinate apples, melons, strawberries, pumpkins, and other similar crops. While at the honey farm, you’ll have an opportunity to create your own beeswax candle! Next we learn about the art of growing and painting gourds at the Lankford Farm and Homestead Primitives. You’ll have a chance to view her primitive furniture and antiques in her farmhouse as well as take home a surprise gift! Lunch will be enjoyed at a local independent family restaurant. After lunch we’ll enjoy dessert at Traders Point Creamery in Zionsville, a family owned artisan organic dairy! In addition, you’ll have a tour of their dairy farm and sample their delicious cheese and chocolate milk! You’ll also have a chance to shop at their Farmer’s Market, so be sure to bring a small cooler if you wish (be sure to put your name on it!). “M”

Fair Oaks Farm & “Green Power”!

Wear your “farm” clothes as we travel to Northwest Indiana where we start our day milking the cows! Oops – mistake, we don’t milk the cows, but we do take a bus to tour Fair Oaks Farms, one of the largest dairy farms in the United States. We’ll get to see the carousel type milking process first hand, and the dairy processing plant where you can see cheese and ice cream made! Experience the creation of life as you witness the birthing of a calf in the birthing barn. Enjoy a buffet lunch which will include some of the ice cream made at Fair Oaks! Be sure to take a small cooler along, if you wish to take home some goodies as you stop at the gift and cheese shops! Then it’s on to Reynolds, IN where we have the unique opportunity to witness “Green Power”! We will visit 3 renewable energy plants which create “green power”. The first plant is Liberty Landfill, which takes the methane gas from landfills to create electricity. The second plant processes “cow poo” in an anaerobic digester to generate methane gas, which is then used to power internal combustion engines to generate electricity. The third plant is the Reynolds Wastewater Treatment plant, which uses the Algaewheel system for a variety of things including the generation of electricity! After a day of learning about cows and “green power”, it time to go home as you think —WOW – what a unique fun day! “M”

Artisans, Culinary & More in Bloomington, IN

From sculpting limestone, weaving yarns to savoring delectable foods, you’re sure to enjoy a day in Bloomington and Ellettesville, Indiana observing various artisans at work. We start the day in Bloomington at the Textillery Weavers, a textile mill, where we will tour their new 37,000 square foot, state of the art facility. They are one of the few textile mills in the world specializing in handwoven products. Our next stop is at the Bloomington Culinary School where you are sure to enjoy a leisurely lunch featuring fine cuisine. Let your palate taste the savory meal created by the food artisans at work! We then head to Ellettesville to the reknowned Bybee Stone Co., where we will watch sculpture artisans at work and have an opportunity to talk to them at the Indiana Limestone Symposium. Observe beginning and advanced carvers as nationally known stone artists instruct these carvers. The Symposium was founded in 1996 by two master stone sculptors based on the Greek model of coming together for discussion and celebration. After a sensory fun filled day, we head back home! “M”

Fabulous Fountains of Chicago

Everyone loves a water feature and Chicagoans are no exception! Through the years Chicago has become the home of some fabulous fountains. Our favorite Chicago expert, Bill Hinchliff, provides the historical backdrop as our bus meanders through the parks and boulevards to view these urban jewels that enhance this fabulous city. This tour will feature the Fountain of the Great Lakes at the Art Institute, which is part of a beautiful Modernist park by the great landscape architect Dan Kiley (who worked a lot in Columbus, Indiana because of his close association with Eero Saarinen; ); the Melas Centennial Fountain along the Chicago River, which erupts every hour on the hour –we’ll be there to see it go! — with a spectacular arch of water that shoots across the river; the Fountain of Time by Lorado Taft (one of the largest sculptures in the U.S.) and the oldest fountain in Chicago (early 1880s) called the Drexel Fountain, near Obama’s house, which we’ll drive by after seeing the fountain; the Storks at Play Fountain in Lincoln Park and, of course, Chicago’s most famous, Buckingham Fountain, one of the world’s largest decorative fountains and the great centerpiece of America’s only large-scale French-style park. In the middle of all this beauty, we will enjoy a delicious lunch at Francesca’s, one of the local favorites in the part of the city called Little Italy. Today we indulge our five senses, as we gaze upon beautiful gardens, listen to the history of the Muncie area, touch and smell the fragrant flowers and taste some fine cuisine! Our first stop will be at one of the largest herb farms in the Midwest, Carolee’s Herb Farm, located in lovely rural Blackford County, IN where you can stroll through 20 different gardens, highlighting historic herbs, old fashioned flowers, exotic treasures from faraway lands, or hidden woodland beauties. We then travel to Muncie, IN, where we will tantalize our taste buds at Vera Mae’s Bistro, one of IFA’s culinary stars. Next we tour the Minnetrista, a museum offering exhibits featuring beautiful gardens, the Ball home, Nature Area, and numerous sculptures on a 40 acre campus. The name chosen by the Ball family for the property was taken from a Sioux word, “mna” (pronounced mini) which means “water,” and combined with the English word, “tryst,” to form “Minnetrista,” or, “a gathering place by the water.” As we leave the Muncie area we make one last stop to smell and taste some delectable chocolate or home made ice cream at Good’s Candy Shop in Anderson, IN before heading home! “A”

The turn of the century paddlewheeler was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989, and celebrated her 90th birthday in 2004. We’ll stop at the Louisville Waterfront Park, to view the Lincoln Memorial before we travel over the river to Jeffersonville, IN, to visit the Howard Steamboat Museum which is housed in the beautiful century-old Howard mansion! Hear the story of the hard-working Howards and their famous riverboats of which over 3,000 vessels were built in the nearby shipyard. View the massive 22-room Romanesque Revival mansion that was built adjacent to the old Howard Shipyard in 1894. Tippecanoe and Nelson Too!

Once again we have the privilege of joining Nelson Price and the Indiana Society of Pioneers on an interesting excursion into Tippecanoe County’s past. Nelson provides the always informative historical back drop as we travel to the Delphi area for the first half of our day. We will take a private “cruise” on the Wabash & Erie Canal aboard the only working canal boat in Indiana—as our guide shares anecdotes and insights about everyday life 150 years ago. While there we will tour the Reed Case House, a grand Federal-style home built in 1844, and spend time in the Canal Interpretive Center, a museum that includes interactive exhibits. Canal expert Dan McCain will provide a special, colorful presentation about the building of the canal and the lives of Hoosiers impacted by all that took place. Lunch will follow at a restaurant located in a lovely wooded area of Lafayette called The Trails, which was voted “Best Buffet” 3 years running in the local paper, “The Journal and Courier”. Next, a guide from the Tippecanoe County Historical Association will direct our visit to the Tippecanoe Battlefield, the legendary site of a clash between two cultures—pioneer settlers and Native Americans. Down the road, we will visit the recreation of Fort Ouiatenon, a military and trading outpost constructed by New France. While there, we will have the privilege of hearing Pioneer member, Bob Dora, a descendant of French explorer Sieur de La Salle, share insights about the fort and his ancestors. We will enjoy wine and cheese as we head home making one final stop at Donaldson’s Finer Chocolates, a gourmet chocolate shop in Lebanon, with an opportunity to shop. Join the Sanders Family as they send Mervin and June off in style, with hilarious and touching stories and 25 fabulous Gospel favorites. On our return home, we’ll make a stop in Richmond, IN to tour the beautiful Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church. View the craftsmanship and stories depicted by the 62 windows that were created by the Louis Tiffany studio. Afterwards just relax and enjoy a comfortable ride home while enjoying a snack along the way! “E”
