10 Checklist Items to Remember Before You Travel

Traveling can be a wonderful and enriching experience, especially when you're on a Sunrise Tour! Often, we need to be reminded of several steps to take and action items to complete before taking off on the next getaway.

Here are 10 tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey with all of your bases covered:

1. Plan Ahead: Take the time to research your destination, accommodations, and activities. Fortunately, our Tour Planners take care of this step for you, but it never hurts to do a bit of research on your own! Take a deeper look at the itinerary ahead of time in order to best plan for proper attire and shoes, as well as be sure the trip will suit your interests and physical capabilities. Perhaps you can even look ahead to make plans during scheduled free-time, such as tickets for a museum visit or transportation for heading into town!

2. Pack Wisely: Pack light and bring only essential items. Consider comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear for walking. If you intend to purchase souvenirs or gifts, ensure you have plenty of room in your luggage to transport your new items back home safely. Tip: Packing cubes allow for better, more compact organization among your belongings, saving you space and creating additional storage for take-home items.

3. Collect Travel Documents: Be sure your state-issued ID and/or official U.S. passport are at least 6 months from expiration. If you are traveling domestically only, leave your passport at home, just make sure your ID is with you at all times. If you are traveling internationally, you are required to bring a valid U.S. passport. If you do not have a passport, it's best to make a plan to obtain a passport with as much time as possible before your departure.

4. Check Insurance Coverage: Ensure your health insurance covers travel-related incidents and medical emergencies, especially when traveling abroad. If you purchased travel insurance, make sure you have all of the information connected to your package that you may need in case of an emergency.

5. Health Check: Before traveling, especially international travel, schedule a check-up with your doctor to discuss your travel plans and ensure you are in good health. Let your doctor know the physical requirements of you on this trip. If you have pre-existing conditions, be sure your travel companion is aware of any needs you may have.

6. Prepare Medications and Prescriptions: If you take daily medications, pack enough for the entire trip plus a few extra days, along with copies of prescriptions and a list of medications in case of emergencies. You will want to be prepared in case your trip is extended for any reason or your luggage gets lost in transit.

7. Stay Active: While traveling, be sure to engage with the group in light physical activities like walking tours, gentle hikes, or water exercises when available in order to maintain your energy levels and stay ready throughout the entirety of the trip. Note: A "gentle-walkers" group may be available on tour, depending on the size of the group and number of guides available.

8. Stay Hydrated: Travel can be dehydrating, so make a plan to ensure you drink plenty of water, especially in hot climates, during active outings, or when traveling by plane. On domestic tours, water will be available on the motorcoach, but we still advise against relying solely on the Sunrise Tours provided refreshments for hydration. Water on the motorcoach cannot be guaranteed on international tours, so ensure that you come prepared with a plan to stay hydrated.

9. Be Mindful of Your Surroundings: While exploring new places, be aware of your surroundings, and stay cautious in unfamiliar areas, particularly in crowded places. Always stay with your companion and/or group, keep your belongings closed and on the front of your person, and look out for suspicious behavior. If you feel uncomfortable, inform your Tour Director or your local guide immediately.

10. Embrace Flexibility: Be open to adjusting your plans if needed. Allow time for rest and relaxation during the trip to avoid burnout. If there is an activity that doesn't particularly interest you, or if you are exhausted and would rather relax, don't be afraid to sit that one out in order to stay well-rested for other adventures.

Remember, most of all, traveling is about enjoying new experiences and making lasting memories. With proper planning and a positive mindset, you'll be more able to relax and have an amazing time exploring the world.
